Lit device short story
One icy cold winter day, Olivia decided to go Ice Skating. Olivia grabbed her light pink laced up skates and her backpack and headed down to the frozen river. All the trees and everything she could see for miles were covered in fluffy white snow. She puts her ice skates on and glides down the ice as smooth as butter. She does tricks and spins around a million times. She is so happy being alone, then and there she doesn't worry about any of her problems. Should she be worrying about her problems?
Two years ago it all started. Just 24 months, 104 weeks and 730 days can change everything.
Olivia hears arguing from her bedroom when doing homework one night. She looks up and thinks nothing of it. She hears more yelling now but can't make out any words. Suddenly she hears silence. Olivia feels frightened, alone, scared and puzzled. Later that night her mother comes to tuck her in.
“Mom” she says “Is everything ok with you, dad and Ethan?”
“It's fine honey, don't worry about it.” she replied kissing her on the head.
“Sleep tight, I love you.” she says while turning off the lights.
She walks out and closes the door behind her.
Olivia sits down on a tree stump next to the ice. She sighs and looks at her watch. 7:29 the numbers on the digital watch project. She is simply scared she will be late for school. She rushes up the hill back to her house in time. She sprints past her house to the spot where the bus picks her up. The bus comes to a stop at the corner and she climbs on. She pulls out a granola bar she packed last night. She stares out the window the whole time and thinks to herself.
She arrives at school and gets ready for another dreaded day at school. The whole day feels like it is going by in slow motion. Every class she thinks, dreams and wonders waiting for the bell to ring. She takes the bus home and sits at home. All alone.
“Honey your dad and I need to talk to you” My mom says as she walks in the kitchen.
“Is everything okay?” Olivia asks.
“You know not all marriages last. And you're father and I are in that situation,” She says slowly
“We’re sorry,” My dad looks up and tells me.
Olivia runs upstairs crying, she has nothing now. What comes next for her?
Lit device #1 “Ice as smooth as butter” is a simile because it is comparing the smoothness of butter to the Ice
Lit device #2 “spins around a million times” is a hyperbole because she didn't actually spin one million times just a lot so it seemed like a million.
Lit device # 3 “Should she be worrying about her problems?” is foreshadowing because it shows something bad is happening.
Lit device #4 “Olivia hears arguing from her bedroom when doing homework one night. She looks up and thinks nothing of it. She hears more yelling now but can't make out any words. Suddenly she hears silence. Olivia feels frightened, alone, scared and puzzled. Later that night her mother comes to tuck her in.” Is a large flashback and it continues longer.
Lit device #5 “She is simply scared she will be late for school” is alliteration because many words in the sentence start with an s.
Lit device #6 “like it is going by in slow motion” is a simile because it is comparing how slow time is going to an effect.
